API for wordpress-like integration?108

Hi! I'm looking at ninja post as a possible option to add discussions to www.glowscript.org, a tool for writing and sharing 3D graphics programs. In addition to a basic forum, I am interested in having a "comment thread" for each public program created by a user (created lazily when someone posts an actual comment, so as to not clutter the forum). Based on what the "Wordpress integration" video says about replacing blog post comments with forum threads, it sounds like this might be technically possible, but I don't see any documented API. Thoughts? Thanks, David

Hi David, There is no API per se -- but there are some options to integrate Ninja Post with WordPress. There is a basic plugin to display recent threads in the side bar. You can also insert the latest NP threads on your main page with a link to comments/replies. To be honest, I would not worry about cluttering the forum with too many threads/comments. However, this is a good problem to have and if your forum gets too busy we can add sub forums or take other steps to manage the activity. Again, this is a really good problem to have. I work closely with all admins to optimize their forums. For example, if there is a way to embed glowscripts into a web page I can work with you to implement something like this.

Mike, Thanks for the reply on a Saturday night! glowscript.org is a side project for me, so I'm usually working on it at odd hours. I like the design, philosophy and simplicity of NP, and the hosted model will save me a lot of time. So using it is my first choice at the moment, if I can get a reasonable degree of integration. My second choice would be something like Vanilla forums, which since I can get at the source code are at least flexible. My site isn't actually using wordpress in any way, so I can't directly use your plugins. What I am asking about was something stated briefly in the video, which was that NP could replace the comment system for blog posts. I'm assuming this implies some sort of automated way to create NP threads corresponding to blog posts. Now that I have created a test forum, maybe this has something to do with the unexplained "news feed" option in the admin console? Or am I barking up entirely the wrong tree? I appreciate that you work closely with your users and that seems like one of the strengths of your service. I'm certainly open to suggestions about what I should do, as well as how.

Yes, we can build a custom RSS feed that you can parse with PHP to display on your main page, even if you don't have Wordpress. I'd be happy to help you fashion a feed that we can parse on your main site. The "news feed" is designed to help site admins add fresh content to their site. In a typical case, we'd build an RSS feed that combines multiple news feeds into a single RSS feed. The news feed is then parsed in a way that makes it easy to add new threads to your forum. This is more applicable to a forum that revolves around news updates (such as a sports team) but you could use it to search for news items relating to 3D computer modeling. If you're able to provide a showcase for Glowscript 3D simulations on you main site that will inspire people to participate on the forum. Good luck with your demo!

So to be clear, if my site provided an RSS feed of, say, recently created programs, NP could read that feed and create a thread for each entry? With how much delay? Another option would be for me to provide a specific link from the run page for a program (see here for an example run page) to either "Post" a program (if it's yours) or "Comment" on the program (if it's not yours). Can I construct a URL to create a post with some title, content, etc? To open a specific thread thus created? (Feel free, if you would like, to sign in and take a look around the site; you might find it interesting!)
